The Paris Métro or Métropolitain serves as the primary rapid transit system in Paris, France. Known for its architectural unity influenced by Art Nouveau, the Métro has grown to symbolize the city. The network features sixteen mainly underground lines, covering a total of 214 km (133 mi) and encompassing 301 stations (384 stops), with 62 allowing transfers to other lines.
Paris boasts one of the most concentrated Metro networks globally, with 245 stations spread across 86.9 km² (34 sq mi) within the city limits. The lines are numbered from 1 to 14 with two supplement lines, 3bis and 7bis, that were once part of lines 3 and 7.
The lines are easily identifiable on maps by number and color, with directions specified by the destination terminus. Paris holds the distinction of having the second busiest metro system in Europe after Moscow, catering to about 4.5 million daily passengers and an annual total of 1.479 billion (2009) passengers.
A standout feature is Châtelet – Les Halles, recognized as the world's largest Metro station, interconnected with five Métro lines and three RER commuter rail lines.
The inauguration of the initial line on July 19, 1900, coincided with the World Fair (Exposition Universelle). Rapid expansion took place until World War I, with the core network completed in the 1920s. Suburban extensions, alongside Line 11, were constructed in the 1930s.
Post-World War II saw network saturation prompting innovations like newer trains to accommodate higher traffic. Further enhancements were restricted due to network design constraints like short distances between stations, leading to the creation of a second network.
In addition to the Métro, downtown Paris and its environs benefit from the RER system's development starting in the 1960s. The area is also serviced by numerous tramway lines, Transilien suburban trains, and two VAL lines offering direct connections to Charles De Gaulle and Orly airports.
The late 1990s witnessed the construction of automated Line 14 aimed at alleviating congestion on RER Line A.
On June 26, 2012, plans were unveiled for Wi-Fi coverage for most Paris Métro stations. The service is provided free of charge to users, with a premium paid option available for faster internet connectivity.
